Remote Sensing Analysis to Quantify Change in Woodland Canopy Cover on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, Arizona, USA (1935 vs. 2017)

چکیده

Since the late 1800s, pinyon–juniper woodland across western U.S. has increased in density and areal extent encroached into former grassland areas. The San Carlos Apache Tribe wants to gain qualitative quantitative information on historical conditions of their tribal woodlands use as a baseline for restoration efforts. At Reservation, east-central Arizona, large swaths containing varying mixtures juniper (Juniperus spp.), pinyon (Pinus spp.) evergreen oak (Quercus are culturally important focus restoration. To determine changes canopy cover, we developed image analysis techniques monitor tree shrub cover using 1935 2017 aerial imagery compared results over 82-year interval. Results showed substantial increase savannas, encroachment (mostly juniper) grasslands Big Prairie. is currently engaged converting back an open savanna, more characteristic assumed pre-reservation that area. Our shows areas Bee Flat that, under Tribe’s active efforts, have returned levels roughly analogous measured 1935.

Remote sensing for cover change assessment in southeast Arizona

Understanding landscape conversion is vital for assessing the impacts of ecological and anthropogenic disturbances at regional and global scales. Since rangelands cover nearly half of the global land surface, and because a large part of rangelands is located in semi-arid ecosystems, they serve as critical land cover types for determining regional biodiversity, global biogeochemical cycles, and ...

Remote Sensing Analysis of Land Cover Change

In Australia, remotely sensed Landsat data is routinely used for mapping and monitoring changes in the extent of woody perennial vegetation. Time series remotely sensed satellite imagery and ground information is used to form multi-temporal classifications of presence/absence of woody cover. Two broad-scale operational land cover change and monitoring projects are based on a series of algorithm...

Land cover land use mapping and change detection analysis using geographic information system and remote sensing

Land cover/land use categories are relevant components in land management. Understanding how land cover/land use change over time is necessary to assess the consequences of humans and natural stressors on the earth’s environment and resources. The aim of the study was to map and monitor the spatial and temporal change in land cover/land use for the periods of 1977, 1991 and 2016 and to predict ...

Vegetation Cover Analysis of Hazardous Waste Sites in Utah and Arizona Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensing

This study investigated the usability of hyperspectral remote sensing for characterizing vegetation at hazardous waste sites. The specific objectives of this study were to: (1) estimate leaf-area-index (LAI) of the vegetation using three different methods (i.e., vegetation indices, red-edge positioning (REP), and machine learning regression trees), and (2) map the vegetation cover using machine...

Remote Sensing and Modeling in Regional Land Cover Change Study

This paper summarises the general pattern of urban land-cover change in the Northeastern Illinois between 1972 and 1997 using Landsat acquired remotely sensed images. The region, centred by the city of Chicago, experienced dramatic land cover change in the past decades. Accompanying the redistribution of population and decentralisation of metropolitan functions are the tremendous growth and dev...
